Tom Lynch

My journey into the tech world began back when I was in my early teens, designing banners and logos on Photoshop for a game I played online. This led me to design web pages, and from there I had to know how to turn those designs into real sites! Naturally, I hunted the internet and taught myself HTML and CSS. Then my boring plain sites needed some interactivity, so I moved on to JavaScript. But what? I can’t process a form? Ok better learn PHP! That sort of process has never stopped, in fact, I’m learning a new language as I type this bio! As far as I’m concerned, anything I design or build can be improved, and there’s always something new I can learn, which has been the main driving force that has brought to me where I am today!

When I’m not sat at a computer tapping away I read a lot, enjoy cooking, and watching TV and films, but my biggest love is martial arts. I started training in Karate when I was at university, and I’ve been addicted ever since! I’ve since become a black belt and instructor of Taekwon-Do and I continue to train and teach multiple times a week across numerous different styles. I love competitions, whether I’m competing myself or coaching my students to win medals and trophies as well. I’ve always been a fan of the ‘destruction’ event, or put simply, smashing lots of boards in half with various body parts!

Question & Answer

Why did you want to work at MoreNiche?

After meeting the team and visiting the MN offices for a community meet-up, I was struck by the atmosphere in the team and the commitment to proper strategy and planning. So when an email came through saying they were hiring I was intrigued to learn more. From there every step of the recruitment process and all the team members I met just reinforced that the company was an awesome place to work, where I could also learn a hell of a lot. After all that I couldn’t wait to join the team! I’m happy to report that all the first impressions were absolutely correct! The culture that the team have created, and still continue to refine, is amazing to be a part of, and I can’t wait to help the team achieve even more than they already have!

What are your top 3 (e)sports / wellness activities?

Martial Arts, Rock Climbing, Obstacle Course Races (mud runs)

How old do you feel?

24 – that’s when I stopped counting!

What's the craziest thing you have ever done?

I’ve never really done anything super crazy, so it’s probably a toss up between deciding to bite the bullet and join a karate club when I started uni. Me, a shy, rake thin, not massively sporty person, learning to fight and yell HIYAH! (We don’t really do that…much…) or deciding to do a 200ft abseil down a hotel in Nottingham. I saw a flier at the local rock climbing centre, and despite not really being a huge fan of heights at the time, thought why not. It was only when I got to the top of the hotel that the guy running the event said I had to hold onto the rope and let it out slowly, and not to let go, or I’d drop and die. Yea, that’s how you inspire confidence! Regardless, I did it, and I get reminded of it every time I drive by that hotel!

What is your most used emoji?

Probably the laughing or crying laughing one. I love to laugh!

If you could choose a superpower, what would it be?

I’d go with the power Sylar has in the TV series Heroes. The ability to understand how everything works, including other superpowers, allowing him to be able to inherit those powers as well! Why have one when you can learn them all!?
